ITI Graduate Arthur Bubnevych Appointed Bishop and Eparch in Phoenix

The ITI Catholic University is proud to announce that one of its distinguished alumni, Arthur Bubnevych, has been appointed as the Bishop of the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Holy Protection of Mary in Phoenix, USA. This significant appointment recognizes Bishop Bubnevych's dedication and commitment to service within the Church.

The appointment was announced in Washington, D.C., on November 8, 2024, by Cardinal Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States.

Bishop-elect Arthur Bubnevych was born on June 22, 1975, in Perechin, Ukraine, and entered the Greek-Catholic seminary of the Eparchy of Mukachevo in Uzhgorod. From 1996 to 2001, he spent six years at the ITI, which provided him with a profound grasp of theological and pastoral disciplines.

He has expressed his gratitude for his ITI education with the following words:

ITI has a special place in my heart. I was gifted with a solid and conservative theological formation by reading the Fathers and Doctors of the Church with particular emphasis on marriage and family. Created to be a bridge between East and West, the ITI taught me to ‘breathe with both lungs’ according to our founding father Pope St. John Paul the Great! The seminar method used at ITI helped me tremendously to develop the virtue of active and responsible reading and thinking and to use my critical judgment, especially after coming from Soviet bloc countries. Being an ITI student for six years, I was living, praying, and celebrating with the vibrant and culturally diverse Catholic community present on campus. The ITI motto was the motto of my priesthood: Sicut cervus ad fontes. Thirst for God, thirst for the truth.

In the new chapter of my ministry as an Eparchial bishop, the ITI formation will help me to be more Christ-like, to be a good shepherd to the flock entrusted to me, proclaiming the truth of the Gospel with love, preserving the Apostolic faith with the authority of the Risen Christ, and being the stronghold of unity and peace by serving the Eucharist and other sacraments.”

The ITI extends heartfelt congratulations to Bishop Bubnevych and looks forward to witnessing the positive impact he will make in his new role.

As the Eparch in Phoenix, Bishop Bubnevych will serve a growing community in the following states: California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, New Mexico, Alaska, and Hawaii.
